Passive businesses: which really run without you?

"Passive" gets used for two different things. A business can run without you and still need a crew every day. Or software can do most of the work. We checked which is which.

Short answer

"Passive" mixes up two questions: does the business run without you, and does it run without people? Amazon FBA, content and affiliate sites and property management come closest to both: the owner is rarely the key and software could take about half the work or more. Cleaning companies run without the owner but on a crew. Many popular picks lean on the owner personally: bookkeeping and tax firms (90% of listings) and home health and senior care (66%).

Runs without you, or runs without people?

We sorted popular "passive" picks into three groups using two readings of every listing: how much the business depends on the owner personally, and how much of its work software and AI could take.

Runs without you, or runs without people? Two different things
Runs without you, mostly on software

The owner is not the key, and software could take half the work or more.

  • Amazon FBA
    Software 6 of 10 · Owner key 9%
  • Content and affiliate sites
    Software 6 of 10 · Owner key 21%
  • Property management
    Software 5 of 10 · Owner key 18%
Runs without you, but on staff

The owner is not the key, but people do the work. You manage people, not software.

  • Cleaning companies
    Software 2 of 10 · Owner key 15%
Leans on the owner

At least 37% of these listings depend on the owner personally: licences, clients, skills.

  • Insurance agencies
    Software 4 of 10 · Owner key 43%
  • Restaurants
    Software 2 of 10 · Owner key 43%
  • Plumbing
    Software 2 of 10 · Owner key 48%
  • HVAC
    Software 2 of 10 · Owner key 47%
  • Landscaping
    Software 2 of 10 · Owner key 48%
  • Home health and senior care
    Software 2 of 10 · Owner key 66%
  • Bookkeeping and tax firms
    Software 4 of 10 · Owner key 90%
Owner key = share of listings an AI model rated high on depending on the owner personally; the line is 37%, the share across all US listings. Software = the 1-10 read of how much of the work software and AI could take. Kinds with at least 25 US listings.

Which ones run without you?

The owner is not the key when customers, licences and know-how do not sit with one person. Here is the share of listings that depend on the owner personally. Lower is better for a buyer who wants to step back.

Which ones run without people?

This is the other half. In Amazon FBA, content and affiliate sites and property management, most of the work is messages, orders, listings, rent and bookkeeping, which software and AI can take. In cleaning, plumbing or a restaurant, the work is done by hands.

Out of 10, for the typical listing of each kind: how much of the people's work today's software and AI could take over, as read by an AI model from the listing.

The popular picks that lean on you

Bookkeeping and tax firms (90%), Home health and senior care (66%), Plumbing (48%) lead the list. Clients know the owner, the licence is in the owner's name, or the owner does the skilled work. You can still buy one, but plan for a licensed manager or for doing that part yourself. Software helps with the office, not with the relationships.

What about vending machines, ATMs and child care?

Too few listings to say. Our scan had 16 vending and ATM routes, 18 child care and 10 auto repair listings in the US. We do not rank kinds with fewer than 25. Vending still means someone restocks, collects and fixes machines every week.

What should you ask a seller who says "passive"?

  1. How many hours a week do you work, and on what? Show me a normal week.
  2. Who does the rest, and what do you pay them?
  3. Which customers, suppliers or licences depend on you personally?
  4. What breaks if you are away for two weeks?

More questions are in questions to ask a seller.

What this data cannot tell you

  • These are asking prices, not the prices businesses sold for.
  • Profit is the seller's own figure. It often includes the owner's pay, so someone still has to do that work.
  • It is a snapshot of listings from October 2026, not a survey of all businesses.
  • Both readings come from an AI model reading each listing's text. They can be wrong, and sellers describe their businesses in the best light.
  • Kinds here are found by keywords in the listing, so one listing can count in more than one kind.

Questions about passive businesses

What is the most passive business to buy?

Of the kinds with enough listings to read, Amazon FBA, content and affiliate sites and property management come closest. Few of their listings depend on the owner personally (9%, 21%, 18%), and software and AI could take about half the work or more. Someone still chooses products and deals with suppliers.

Is a cleaning business passive?

It can run without the owner: only 15% of 59 cleaning listings depend on the owner personally. But it runs on people. Software could take about 2 of every 10 parts of the work, mostly scheduling, quotes and invoices. You would be managing a crew, not software.

Are vending machines a passive business?

We cannot say from our data. Only 16 US vending and ATM listings were in the scan, too few to read. Someone still restocks the machines, collects cash and fixes breakdowns. Ask the seller how many hours a week that takes and who does it.

How do I check if a business is really passive?

Ask for the owner's weekly hours, task by task. Only 9% of US listings state them. Then sort the tasks: office work software can take, hands-on work a person must do, and decisions only an owner makes. If customers or licences depend on the owner, it is not passive.
